Satin spar?
Does anyone know anything about Satin Spar Gypsum, specifically the kind that appears in this formation:

Photobucket

The internet is no help - and most of the sites I find refer to it as Selenite, which isn't very reassuring, as it's not actually a form of Selenite.

Nothing is a form of selenite; selenite is, like satin spar, a form of gypsum, which is one reason why there's so much muddiness about the distinction between them. (The other being that selenite is the "sexier" name, and from the poking around I've done it looks like most of the things I've ever seen labeled selenite are either satin spar or beyond my ability to distinguish between them.) If you like Melody's book, the entry on gypsum covers satin spar.

One thing is that when it comes to minerals and what the truth is from fiction, you go here:

http://webmineral.com/Alphabetical_Listing.shtml

Web Mineral even has pronunciation guides and pictures to help you ID your stuff. The best part is they show the chemical composition and tell you what minerals make up the mineral you're looking at, as well as all the different trade names.

Regardless, in the New Age community, quite a few stones get renamed just because. Kambaba Jasper, Selenite, Azeztulite, etc. They're all renamed forms of other stones. Mainly people like to trademark the name so they can sue other people trying to sell it as the trade name.

My understanding is that Satin Spar and Selenite are just trade names that fell into common use a while back.

If you see a TM after anything, I like to think that it stands for 'Took Metaphysical'. In other words, I think the greed of Trademarking a stone to resell a cheap stone for a higher price cancels out any positive effect a stone might have because quartz and other stones amplify vibrations, those stones will always have the greed of the trademark placed on them.

This is the only listing I found where it is listed as a separate type of gypsum... but they are all gypsum.
